Post-Operative Instructions: Medication

BACK

You have been given prescriptions for your post-operative care. Please follow these instructions to minimize your discomfort.

Ibuprofen will be your most important post-operative medication. Please start this medication as soon as you have it filled. You’ll want to have some food with this medication. Soup or milkshakes are great! Continue the ibuprofen every 6 hours for the next 4 days.

You may have also been given a prescription for a narcotic analgesic, either Vicodin® (hydrocodone) or Percocet® (oxycodone). Please take this medication only sparingly as it can cause nausea and vomiting if taken too frequently. Use this medication to supplement the ibuprofen only if the ibuprofen is not adequately controlling your discomfort.

Please continue any antibiotic prescriptions that you have been given to complete your course.

This regimen is extremely effective. If you follow these instructions you are most likely to have an uneventful post-operative course. If you have any questions about these instructions, please contact us immediately.
