Dr. Lieblick and Dr. Rehrer of Beacon Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons develop “Beacon Academic Advantage” program for junior high and high school students of the Portland area
Portland, Oregon (November 10, 2015) – The number of aspiring medical professionals reached a record high in 2014, according to a report from the Association of American Medical Colleges. Additionally, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services projected that health spending will grow 1.1 percent faster than the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per year between 2014 and 2024, and that National Health Expenditures are expected to rise from 17.4 percent in 2013 to 19.6 percent by 2024. As these numbers continue to rise, the competition is becoming fiercer among college-bound students. Fortunately, a unique opportunity for local junior high and high school students to learn more about their options in the dental, medical, and healthcare field, is now available through a program provided by Dr. Russell Lieblick, DMD, and Dr. Brandon Rehrer, DDS. The Beacon Academic Advantage program is designed to provide students with a clear roadmap outlining the requirements for medical school, including all academic, extracurricular, and professional perquisites students must complete throughout their schooling.
The program will educate participating students about the limitless potential of a dental, medical, or healthcare career, and it will help them gain a solid grasp of each step required along the path to pursuing a career in oral and maxillofacial surgery and other specialty areas of medicine. Students will have the rare opportunity to learn what is expected from them in their high school career, while also receiving guidance through the college search and application process.
“We are excited to act as mentors for local kids interested in a healthcare profession,” explained Dr. Lieblick. “For students and families facing academic or financial challenges during the application process, we will help them find counseling and financial resources by enlisting the support of partners in our community.”
Drs. Lieblick and Rehrer, Dr. Aaron Tinkle, General Dentist at Belmont Family Dentistry, Sylvia Hernandez, Assistant Director for Portland Metro Recruitment at University of Oregon, and private educational counselor Eric Delehoy, Founder of Delehoy College Counseling, will host a free 90-minute seminar that will detail everything attendees need to know about the life of a medical professional, how to get into the best schools, and what they should be doing now to prepare for the future. Especially in the Healthcare field, the initial high school years are crucial for planning higher education. Drs. Lieblick and Rehrer will be giving thorough examples of their personal journey to becoming oral and maxillofacial surgeons and what the career entails. Dr. Tinkle will discuss his journey through dental school and what being a general dentist is all about. Finally, Sylvia Hernandez and Eric Delehoy will inspire students to work hard in school, get the best grades and test scores, and follow a well-considered academic plan.
Through the program, Drs. Lieblick and Rehrer have set a goal to help students recognize that it takes far more than a solid grade point average to thrive in the medical field. They hope to engrain in the minds of these students that a career in medicine requires a host of other activities, including volunteering, internships, and lab work.
