Stem cells hold incredible potential, and doctors and researchers around the world are only just beginning to uncover their many medical uses. If you had an opportunity to save your stem cells, knowing it could help preserve your future, would you take it? With the advancements being made every day in stem cell collection and storage, this question is becoming a reality. Many people don’t realize that our teeth are a valuable source for stem cell banking. The cells can be taken from healthy adult teeth, such as wisdom teeth, after they’ve been removed.
At Beacon Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, we’ve partnered with Stemodontics™. Eligible extraction patients will have the opportunity sign up to have their stem cells harvested and stored. You can learn more about the stem cell storage process by visiting the Stemodontics website, asking one of our doctors if stem cell banking is right for you, and by watching the helpful videos that we’ve provided below.
What are stem cells?
Many people have heard of stem cells but are unaware that they exist in teeth and hold such potential for medical discovery. Your body houses many different types of cells, and when you are injured, these cells will typically regenerate and repair. However, specialized cells, such as muscle tissue cells, can only regenerate and repair other cells of the same type. Stem cells are unique because they’re able to repair any type of cell your body needs. They are not limited to a single cell type, which means they can restore and heal skin, bones, muscles, nerves, and more.
As time passes, medicine and research regarding stem cells advances, and clinicians discover new methods for collecting stem cells, storing them in a controlled environment, and replicating for use in future medical treatment. Doctors and researchers are finding new ways to harness the power of stem cells and apply them in a way that encourages our bodies to heal. Diseases and disorders that were once believed to be untreatable may be treatable with stem cells.
Why bank stem cells?
Healthy stem cells are in abundance in our bodies when we are young; however, the older we get, the more the quantity and quality of these cells begin to decline. Each time the cells duplicate, they lose value, making it harder for our bodies to recover from illness or injury. We can maximize stem cells’ viability for future use by harvesting and storing them as early as possible.
There are limited opportunities to safely and painlessly collect stem cells, which is why we encourage our eligible patients to take advantage of this chance. Wisdom teeth removals are ideal for stem cell harvesting and can make a difference in preserving your medical future.
