Early Detection and Treatment of Oral Cancer and Diseases
Oral pathology refers to any disease that can develop inside the mouth, salivary glands, or jaws. While many oral pathologies are benign (non-cancerous), you should get an early evaluation and proper treatment of any oral irregularities in order to avoid severe complications or the need for a more extensive surgical procedure. If you notice an irregularity inside of your mouth or are referred to Beacon Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons for an oral evaluation, you can have peace of mind in knowing that your oral health is taken care of by our board-certified oral surgeons and trustworthy team. We take the time to explain all of your options for treatment and are always happy to answer questions you have along the way.
Symptoms of Oral Cancer and Disease
One of the most common areas that will show infection is the smooth, coral pink lining of your mouth. If you notice an irregularity in the appearance of your mouth’s lining or structures, such as the tongue or tonsils, this may be a sign of a pathological process. Typical symptoms of an oral pathology include:
- A chronic sore throat or hoarseness
- Difficulty in chewing or swallowing
- Reddish or whitish patches in the mouth
- A sore that fails to heal and bleeds easily
It is important to remember that not all of these symptoms are painful. However, the absence of pain does not mean that a problem does not exist. If you experience any of the above symptoms on your lips, cheeks, palate, or gum tissue around the teeth, tongue, face, or neck, you should contact one of our offices in Gresham, Milwaukie, or The Dalles, OR, or Camas, WA, immediately.

Treatment for Oral Diseases
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons receive training to identify an oral pathology, and our surgeons look for irregularities during every oral examination. If an abnormality is detected, we may take a biopsy of the area to send to a lab, or identify the type of pathology that day and begin treatment. For any type of procedure, we offer anesthesia and sedation to keep you as comfortable as possible. If necessary, we may take 3D scans of your mouth during the consultation to get a clearer picture of your facial structures.
Treatment may include removing a non-cancerous lump or cyst, or introducing prescription medications. Dr. Lieblick and Dr. Rehrer evaluate each case individually and will design a custom treatment plan based on your specific needs.
